Credit - How to Find the Right Attorney - Part 3

4. Using the Internet

Many lawyers have been slow to adopt this newfangled technology. But those who have jumped in are worth checking out. You can tell a lot about people from their Web sites. At the least, you'll be able to gauge if bankruptcy is a large part of their practice, or just a sideline.

Do they provide a lot of information, or do they simply direct visitors to call for an appointment? Some lawyers provide an e-mail address. You might be able to get a few questions answered by e-mail, and get a feel for the lawyer's knowledge and responsiveness.

Don't expect free legal advice. This isn't just because they want to get paid, although of course they do. All lawyers have to sell is their time and expertise. But many lawyers are justifiably leery about giving out legal advice to people they don't know. You never know when some voice on the phone or an e-mail correspondent could misunderstand the information. There have been cases where attorneys have been sued for malpractice even when the plaintiff never really became a client.

For this reason, most malpractice insurance companies want their insured to set up a formal framework for representation. There's a definite beginning and a definite end to the attorney-client relationship.

5. Using the Yellow Pages

A lot of lawyers look down on those who advertise their services in mass-market venues such as the Yellow Pages. But the Yellow Pages and similar ads are just a start. They're a way for you to find who's out there providing the service you need. You can quickly eliminate anyone who doesn't mention bankruptcy or who lists it as one of twenty "specialties." If it's one of twenty, it ain't special. You can tell a lot about a person from the ad he or she places.

6. Your Lawyer Must Be Approachable and Willing to Provide Information

This is your case and you need to know everything about it. Look for an attorney who invites your questions. You are an informed consumer. You don't want someone to pat you on the knee and tell you everything will be just fine. In all likelihood everything will be just fine. But that is more likely if you understand how the process works and you are completely honest with your lawyer.
